A sweeping nationwide investigation into online child exploitation has led to the arrest of 106 suspects, including 40 individuals in Ontario. The RCMP, in collaboration with Ontario and Quebec police services, announced the results of “Project Steel” during a news conference on Wednesday.
RCMP Insp. Mathieu Girard stated that Internet Child Exploitation units across Canada executed multiple warrants between Feb. 17 and Feb. 28, resulting in over 300 charges laid. The suspects were not identified. Charges include possession and distribution of child pornography, child luring, creation of child pornography, and publication of an intimate image without consent.
Authorities seized 1,132 electronic devices and confirmed that 40 victims were identified, with 37 children safeguarded. Police noted that 395 active investigations remain, with the potential for additional charges.
Between April 2023 and March 2024, the RCMP National Child Exploitation Crime Centre received 118,162 complaints and reports of suspected sexual exploitation offences, marking a 1,278% increase over the past decade. Girard attributed this surge to technological advancements and increased online activity.
He emphasized the need for a collaborative approach, urging law enforcement, government agencies, NGOs, and tech companies to work together to protect children and make the internet safer.
OPP Det. Sgt. Tim Brown confirmed that 31 of the 40 victims were from Ontario. He reaffirmed law enforcement’s commitment to justice, stating, “Every child deserves the right to grow up safe from harm. To those who exploit the most vulnerable, we will find you and bring you to justice.”
