Privacy Commissioner Sues Pornhub Operator Over Privacy Law Violations

Privacy Commissioner Philippe Dufresne is seeking a Federal Court order to compel Pornhub’s operator to comply with Canadian privacy law. This follows his findings that Aylo, the Montreal-based company behind Pornhub and other adult sites, allowed intimate images to be shared without direct knowledge or consent.

The investigation stemmed from a complaint by a woman whose ex-boyfriend uploaded explicit videos and images of her to Aylo’s platforms without permission. Dufresne concluded that Pornhub’s inadequate privacy protections led to severe consequences for the complainant and other victims.

He issued recommendations to bring Aylo into compliance with the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act, but the company disagreed with the findings and did not commit to changes. While Aylo has since adjusted some privacy practices, Dufresne argues its measures still fail to secure meaningful consent from all individuals appearing in videos.

“Privacy is a fundamental right and individuals must be protected,” Dufresne stated. Aylo has not yet responded to requests for comment.
