Trump Backs GOP Rep. Mike Lawler at New York Rally Ahead of Crucial Re-Election Fight

President Donald Trump threw his full support behind Republican Congressman Mike Lawler during a high-profile rally in New York’s Hudson Valley on Friday, as the vulnerable GOP lawmaker prepares for one of the toughest re-election battles in the country.

Speaking at Rockland Community College in Suffern, New York, Trump praised Lawler as “fantastic” and “a terrific guy,” highlighting the congressman’s role in pushing Republican priorities while energizing the party’s MAGA base ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

The rally underscored the political balancing act facing Lawler, who must maintain strong support from Trump loyalists while also appealing to moderate and independent voters in a district considered critical to control of the U.S. House of Representatives.

“Having the president here is a wonderful opportunity for the community,” Lawler told reporters before the event. “People are very enthusiastic and excited to hear from him directly.”

Lawler used the event to reinforce his working relationship with Trump while defending major Republican policies, including Trump’s proposed tax reforms and expansion of the state and local tax deduction known as SALT. He also backed Medicaid work requirements and praised Trump’s economic agenda.

Trump joked that Lawler had been “a pain in the ass” in his aggressive lobbying for SALT deduction relief, drawing laughter from supporters at the rally.

The congressman acknowledged criticism from both political sides, joking that Democrats call him “MAGA Mike” while some conservatives accuse him of being a “RINO” for occasionally breaking with Trump on certain issues.

Lawler’s district remains one of the nation’s most competitive battlegrounds. While he performs strongly in Republican-leaning Rockland County, he faces challenges in Democratic-heavy Westchester County, making his political future uncertain despite previous victories in 2022 and 2024.

The rally comes as Democrats intensify efforts to tie vulnerable Republicans directly to Trump amid concerns over inflation, healthcare costs, and growing criticism surrounding U.S. military actions involving Iran.

Democratic challenger Cait Conley accused both Trump and Lawler of prioritizing politics over working families, claiming their policies are worsening economic pressures across the Hudson Valley.

Still, many rally attendees expressed unwavering support for both men. Some voters praised Lawler for balancing bipartisan cooperation with support for Trump’s America First movement, while others defended Trump’s foreign policy despite concerns about rising fuel prices.

Lawler remains one of only a handful of Republicans representing districts that voted for Democrat Kamala Harris in the last presidential election, making his race a key test for both parties heading into November.
