Messi Reveals PSG Struggles Led to Inter Miami Move

Lionel Messi admitted that his decision to join Major League Soccer club Inter Miami as a free agent stemmed from his difficulties at Paris Saint-Germain, describing his time there as a period he “didn’t enjoy.”

The 37-year-old, who secured two Ligue 1 titles and the 2022 French Super Cup during his two-year stint in Paris, departed the club in 2023. “Signing for Inter (Miami) was an opportunity because of the way things went in my last years in Paris,” the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner revealed in an Apple Music interview on Friday.

“It was a decision I had to make because I had to leave Barcelona, and I spent two years that I didn’t enjoy. I wasn’t happy on a day-to-day basis, with the training sessions, the games—I found it hard to adapt to all that,” the Argentina captain added.

Messi, who claimed 10 LaLiga titles, four Champions League trophies, and three Club World Cups with Barcelona, had to leave in 2021 due to the club’s financial constraints, signing a two-year contract with PSG. However, after leading Argentina to World Cup glory in 2022, Messi faced backlash from PSG fans following the club’s disappointing Champions League campaign. He was also suspended for an unauthorized trip to Saudi Arabia, missing a training session in the process.

The Argentine ultimately joined Inter Miami, reportedly rejecting a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia, and expressed his commitment to helping MLS grow. “MLS has matured and continues to grow. I hope it doesn’t stop and other clubs can see the example of Inter Miami and can boost the competition,” he said.
