Google is actively removing the “state” designation from Canadian government buildings and provincial parks after receiving numerous complaints from Canadians. The company announced updates to its categorization of provincial parks, which were previously labeled as “state parks” in small print—a practice that has faced increased scrutiny following U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats to annex Canada.
While Google is swiftly implementing these changes, similar updates have not yet been made by other services like Bing Maps and TripAdvisor. Apple Maps, however, already uses the “provincial park” categorization.
Experts suggest that this issue highlights the U.S.-centric nature of many technology products and emphasizes the importance of accurate regional labeling.
