Former Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, has shared insights on Nigeria’s political evolution following his attendance at the launch of former military President Ibrahim Babangida’s autobiography, A Journey in Service.
A renowned pro-democracy activist, Fayemi took to LinkedIn on Saturday to highlight the memoir’s significance in shaping national discourse.
“Given my long-standing role as a pro-democracy activist, attending the book launch of A Journey in Service: An Autobiography of Ibrahim Babangida in Abuja was a moment of reflection,” he wrote.
Fayemi acknowledged that the book offers a deep dive into Nigeria’s governance and political landscape, shedding light on defining moments in the nation’s democratic journey.
“General Babangida’s memoir offers insights into leadership, governance, and Nigeria’s political evolution, including defining moments that shaped our democratic struggles,” he stated.
Emphasizing the importance of documenting historical events, Fayemi noted that preserving such experiences is crucial for national learning and dialogue.
“While history will continue to judge every era, documenting these experiences remains crucial for national learning and dialogue,” he added.
Fayemi, who recently marked his 60th birthday with the launch of the Amandla Institute for Policy and Leadership Advancement, was lauded by President Bola Tinubu, who described him as an outstanding leader dedicated to national development.
The event was attended by dignitaries, including former Head of State General Yakubu Gowon, ex-Senate President Dr. Bukola Saraki, Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji, Emir of Kano Sanusi Lamido, former APC National Chairman John Odigie-Oyegun, and ex-Finance Minister Kemi Adeosun.
Meanwhile, Babangida’s autobiography has ignited discussions across political circles, particularly regarding key decisions made during his tenure, including the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election.
Reacting to the memoir, Sadiq Abacha, son of late military ruler General Sani Abacha, defended his father’s legacy, asserting that his leadership remains significant despite ongoing criticism.
