Parts of Nigeria were thrown into darkness on Wednesday following another collapse of the national power grid, marking the second incident this year.
Data from the Nigerian System Operator’s portal (niggrid.org) confirmed that the collapse occurred around 11:30 am. However, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has yet to disclose the cause of the disturbance.
The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) also confirmed the incident, stating, “We regret to inform you that a system disturbance occurred on the national grid at 11:34 am today (Wednesday), causing a power outage across our franchise areas. While gradual restoration of power supply has commenced, please be assured that we are working closely with relevant stakeholders to fully restore electricity as soon as the grid is stabilised.”
A post from a popular Nigeria National Grid account on X further corroborated the development, describing the event as a “GRID DISTURBANCE” that caused outages in parts of the country before noon.
When contacted, TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah stated she was in transit and would provide further updates later.
This latest collapse comes after a similar incident on January 11, 2025, adding to a troubling history of instability that saw 12 grid collapses in 2024.
