Trump Deletes Controversial AI Image Amid Backlash Over Religious Depiction and Pope Feud

Donald Trump has removed a controversial AI-generated image from his Truth Social account after it sparked widespread criticism for portraying him in a Jesus-like role, intensifying an already heated dispute involving Pope Leo XIV.

The now-deleted image depicted Trump in a white robe appearing to heal a sick man, a visual many critics said closely resembled traditional depictions of Jesus Christ. The post quickly drew backlash from across the political and religious spectrum, including from some of Trump’s own supporters, who argued the imagery crossed a line.

Trump later defended the post, telling reporters he believed it showed him “as a doctor making people better,” insisting the intent was not religious. However, critics—including prominent Christian voices—said the portrayal was inappropriate and disrespectful, with some calling for its immediate removal.

The controversy unfolded shortly after Trump publicly criticized Pope Leo XIV, calling him “weak on crime” and “terrible for foreign policy” over the pontiff’s opposition to the ongoing Iran war. The pope, who has consistently advocated for peace and condemned violence, responded by stating he had “no fear” of the Trump administration and would continue to speak out based on the teachings of the gospel.

The timing of the image amplified tensions, linking the social media controversy to a broader clash between political authority and religious leadership. Faith-based media figures and conservative activists joined the criticism, emphasizing that support for Trump’s policies did not justify imagery seen as mocking or trivializing religious beliefs.

This incident is the latest in a series of social media controversies tied to Trump’s online presence. Previous posts have also drawn backlash, including content later removed following bipartisan criticism.

The episode highlights the growing sensitivity around the use of AI-generated imagery in political communication, particularly when it intersects with deeply held religious values and ongoing geopolitical conflicts.
