Trump-Pope Clash Escalates: Pope Leo XIV Says He Has ‘No Fear’ After Criticism Over Iran War

A public feud has erupted between Donald Trump and Pope Leo XIV, as tensions rise over the ongoing Iran war and the role of moral leadership in global conflicts.

The dispute intensified after Trump labeled the pope “weak on crime” and “terrible for foreign policy,” criticizing his stance on the war and broader global issues. The remarks, made during a media appearance and on social platforms, marked one of the sharpest attacks by a U.S. president on a sitting pontiff.

Responding during a papal flight en route to Africa, Pope Leo XIV dismissed the criticism, stating he had “no fear of the Trump administration” and would continue to advocate for peace. He emphasized that his position is grounded in the teachings of the gospel, not political calculation, adding that the Church’s mission is to promote reconciliation and dialogue rather than engage in geopolitical rivalry.

The clash stems largely from the pope’s outspoken opposition to the war in Iran, including criticism of threats against civilian infrastructure and warnings about escalating violence. He has consistently urged world leaders to pursue peace and has called on citizens to pressure governments to de-escalate tensions.

Despite Trump’s accusations, the pope maintained a measured tone, stressing that religious leadership operates from a fundamentally different perspective than political authority. During his visit to Algiers, he reinforced his message of unity and reconciliation, highlighting the need to avoid deepening global divisions.

The disagreement also drew reaction from Paul Coakley, who criticized Trump’s remarks as inappropriate and defended the pope’s spiritual role as distinct from political leadership.

The unfolding dispute underscores a broader divide between political power and religious influence at a time of heightened global instability. While Trump continues to defend his administration’s policies, Pope Leo XIV has made clear he will persist in advocating for peace, regardless of political backlash.
