Runaway Kangaroo ‘Chesney’ Found Safe After Three-Day Escape From Wisconsin Petting Zoo

A young kangaroo that escaped from a petting zoo in Wisconsin after leaping over an eight-foot fence has been safely captured following a three-day search that rallied an entire community.

The 16-month-old kangaroo, named Chesney, broke out of his enclosure at Sunshine Farm in Necedah last Wednesday after stray dogs rushed the fence and frightened him, according to his keeper Debbie Marland. Spooked by the disturbance, the energetic marsupial managed an extraordinary jump over the barrier and disappeared into nearby fields and wooded areas.

Marland and volunteers immediately launched a search across the small town, located about 160 miles northwest of Milwaukee. Residents tracked sightings of the runaway kangaroo and even deployed heat-seeking drones to help narrow down his location.

Marland said the search required long days on foot, logging tens of thousands of steps daily while combing the surrounding countryside for the animal. Despite remaining within about three miles of the farm, Chesney repeatedly evaded searchers.

The breakthrough came Friday night when the kangaroo was spotted resting under a tree in a wooded area. Although a group of volunteers attempted to surround him, Chesney’s speed — kangaroos can run up to 20 miles per hour — allowed him to escape once again.

The following morning, Marland returned to the area with Chesney’s favorite treats and materials carrying the familiar scent of his enclosure and his companion kangaroo, Kenny.

Just as searchers were preparing to leave after another unsuccessful attempt, they spotted Chesney hopping toward them. Stacy Brereton, a friend of Marland who frequently helps at the farm, approached slowly and calmly.

Sensing the familiar voices and smells, Chesney appeared relaxed rather than frightened. Brereton sat quietly and allowed the kangaroo to approach before gently picking up the roughly 40-pound animal.

Chesney was returned safely to Sunshine Farm, where he was reunited with Kenny, his fellow kangaroo and namesake companion inspired by country music star Kenny Chesney.

Sunshine Farm is home to about 25 animals, including horses, sheep, alpacas, Highland cows, Kunekune pigs and a Bactrian camel. The attraction typically opens to visitors from mid-May through mid-November, offering interactive tours where guests can meet the animals.

Though tired and hungry after his adventure, Chesney appeared healthy and is scheduled to receive a veterinary checkup.

Marland said the community’s support played a crucial role in bringing the runaway kangaroo home. The unexpected adventure has even inspired a children’s book about Chesney’s escapade, which Marland hopes to publish to help cover the costs of the search.

To prevent future escapes, the farm plans to install a mesh cover over the kangaroo enclosure — ensuring Chesney’s next big leap remains safely inside the fence.
