Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Saudi Arabia on Thursday, highlighting Ukraine’s experience with drones and offering to assist Gulf countries in enhancing regional security. Zelensky emphasized the importance of energy security, particularly for Europe, and said Ukraine could provide expertise in integrating drones with radars, aviation, and air defence systems.
In return, Zelensky is seeking support to strengthen Ukraine’s own defences against the ongoing Russian invasion, specifically requesting access to air defence missiles that Ukraine currently lacks.
Several Ukrainian drone companies, including Kvertus and TAF Industries, confirmed that Gulf states such as Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, and the UAE have approached them for assistance. However, exports require government approval in Kyiv due to political and security considerations.
The potential deals come amid reports that the US is considering diverting arms intended for Ukraine to the Middle East due to the war in Iran, making Ukraine’s drone cooperation even more strategic.
Zelensky stressed that Ukraine’s drone technology and operational experience could play a critical role in stabilizing global markets and energy supplies while reinforcing Ukraine’s own defence capabilities.
