Elder Sues After Security Door Accident at Winnipeg Airport Leaves Her Injured

A 79-year-old woman from Pikangikum First Nation has filed a lawsuit after suffering serious injuries when a security door unexpectedly closed on her at the Fast Air Jet Centre terminal in Winnipeg. The incident occurred in February 2023 as she was boarding a charter flight home with Superior Airways.

According to the lawsuit filed on Jan. 23 in Manitoba Court of King’s Bench, the woman was using a handheld cane when the electronic security door suddenly shut, causing her to fall. Witnesses rushed to assist her, and despite being in extreme pain, she was helped onto the flight.

Upon arrival in Pikangikum, she was immediately taken to the nursing station, where medical staff determined she had sustained severe injuries, including a possible hip fracture. She was then medevaced to Thunder Bay Regional Health Science Centre for further treatment.

The lawsuit claims the woman has endured physical and emotional suffering, humiliation, loss of enjoyment of life, and other significant effects, including anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder. She has undergone surgery and continues to receive treatment and therapy.

The suit seeks $800,000 in damages from Fast Air Jet Centre Inc., Fast Air Ltd., Winnipeg Airports Authority, and Superior Airways. Her lawyer, Doug Keshen, stated that she has lost much of her independence and now requires a wheelchair or walker, limiting her ability to participate in community gatherings and traditional knowledge sharing.

The allegations have not been tested in court, and the defendants have not yet filed a response.
