Israel to Release 90 Palestinian Prisoners as Hamas Prepares to Free Three Captives in Gaza

Gaza City, January 31, 2025 – In a continued exchange of captives and prisoners, Israel is set to release 90 Palestinian detainees, while Hamas’ armed wing, the Qassam Brigades, has announced the upcoming release of three Israeli captives—Ofer Kalderon, Keith Siegel, and Yarden Bibas—scheduled for tomorrow in Gaza.

Fourth Prisoner Swap Underway

According to the Palestinian Prisoners’ Media Office, the latest exchange agreement includes the release of nine Palestinians serving life sentences and 81 others who have been imprisoned for extended terms. This marks the fourth significant prisoners-for-captives swap since the conflict escalated following the October 7, 2023, attacks by Hamas.

While efforts to broker additional exchanges continue, tensions remain high across both Gaza and the occupied West Bank, with ongoing violence further complicating negotiations.

Escalating Violence: Palestinian Fisherman Killed

Amid these developments, a Palestinian fisherman was reportedly shot and killed by Israeli naval forces off the coast of Gaza, near the Nuseirat refugee camp. Al Jazeera Arabic reported that the fisherman was targeted while working in the central enclave, a region frequently subjected to Israeli maritime restrictions.

Israeli Raids Kill Palestinians in West Bank

Violence also persists in the occupied West Bank, where Israeli forces have killed two more individuals in the Jenin refugee camp. The latest raid follows an Israeli airstrike in the town of Tammun, which claimed the lives of 10 Palestinians just a day earlier. The West Bank has witnessed a sharp rise in deadly incursions since the onset of the war.

Humanitarian Toll of Israel’s War on Gaza

The ongoing Israeli military campaign in Gaza has resulted in an immense humanitarian crisis. Since October 7, at least 47,460 Palestinians have been killed, with 111,580 others wounded, according to Gaza’s health authorities. Meanwhile, the October 7 Hamas-led attacks on Israel led to the deaths of at least 1,139 people, with over 200 individuals taken captive.

As diplomatic efforts continue for further exchanges and ceasefire discussions, the situation in Gaza and the West Bank remains dire, with no immediate resolution in sight.
