President Biden to Deliver Farewell Address Highlighting Legacy of Unity and Resilience

January 17, 2025

President Joe Biden is set to deliver his farewell address to the nation on Wednesday, January 17, marking the conclusion of his four-year tenure as the 46th president of the United States. The speech, scheduled for 8 p.m. ET from the Oval Office, will reflect on the challenges and accomplishments of his administration.

Earlier in the day, Biden released a heartfelt farewell letter to the American people, expressing gratitude and emphasizing the resilience of the nation during a tumultuous period in history.

Reflecting on a Transformative Term

“Four years ago, we stood in a winter of peril and a winter of possibilities,” Biden wrote, referencing the state of the nation when he assumed office in 2021. “We were in the grip of the worst pandemic in a century, the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, and the worst attack on our democracy since the Civil War. But we came together as Americans and braved through it. We emerged stronger, more prosperous, and more secure.”

Biden’s presidency began amid the COVID-19 pandemic, economic turbulence, and heightened political division. He underscored the administration’s achievements in addressing these crises while pushing forward initiatives on climate change, infrastructure, and social equity.

A Half-Century in Public Service

Biden’s career spans more than 50 years in public office, beginning with his election to the U.S. Senate in 1972 at the age of 29. Over the course of his 36-year Senate career, Biden established himself as a prominent figure in foreign policy and judicial matters.

In 2008, he joined then-Senator Barack Obama’s presidential ticket, serving as vice president for two terms. Biden’s leadership during the Obama administration, particularly in steering the nation through the Great Recession, laid the groundwork for his presidential bid in 2020.

“I ran for president because I believed that the soul of America was at stake,” Biden stated in his letter. “The very nature of who we are was at stake. And that’s still the case.”

A Legacy of Unity and Optimism

In his farewell message, Biden invoked the enduring ideals of the American experiment.

“America is an idea stronger than any army and larger than any ocean. It’s the most powerful idea in the history of the world—that we are all created equal, endowed by our Creator with certain unalienable rights: life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. We’ve never fully lived up to this sacred idea, but we’ve never walked away from it either. And I do not believe the American people will walk away from it now.”

Biden will officially leave office on January 20, when President-elect Donald Trump will be sworn in as the 47th president of the United States.

The 2024 Election and a New Political Era

After defeating Trump in the contentious 2020 election, Biden initially planned to seek re-election. However, mounting concerns about his age and mental acuity led to his decision to step aside. Vice President Kamala Harris emerged as the Democratic Party’s nominee, but she ultimately lost to Trump, who secured all seven key battleground states in a decisive victory.

As Biden reflects on his decades of public service, he described his presidency as “the privilege of my life to serve this nation,” reiterating his faith in the resilience and promise of the American people.

The farewell address is expected to highlight the administration’s efforts to restore America’s global leadership, tackle climate change, and uphold democratic values.
