Eligible low-income working Canadians can expect to receive the Advanced Canada Workers Benefit (ACWB) payment from the federal government this Friday. Designed to help offset the rising cost of living, these payments offer financial relief through a refundable tax credit program managed by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).
What Is the Canada Workers Benefit?
The Canada Workers Benefit (CWB) provides financial support to individuals and families with low incomes. Payments consist of a basic amount and a disability supplement, calculated based on various factors such as marital status, income, province or territory of residence, dependents, and eligibility for the disability tax credit.
Payment Breakdown
- Single Canadians:
- Maximum basic annual amount: $1,518 for incomes up to $24,975.
- Maximum disability supplement: $784 for incomes up to $35,098.
- Families:
- Maximum basic annual amount: $2,616 for adjusted net incomes up to $28,494.
- Maximum disability supplement: $784.
The advanced payments, distributed in three installments annually, represent half of the total basic amount and disability supplements. For example, singles may receive up to $1,151 annually, while families may qualify for up to $1,700.
Factors That Affect Payments
The CRA gradually reduces the benefit if the adjusted net income exceeds the initial thresholds. No basic amount is paid if income surpasses $35,095 for singles or $43,212 for families. Similarly, the disability supplement phases out beyond $35,098 for singles and is unavailable if income exceeds $40,325.
Regional variations apply, with adjusted amounts for residents of Quebec, Nunavut, and Alberta. Other factors, including death, incarceration, or emigration, can also impact eligibility.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the basic CWB payment, individuals must:
- Be at least 19 years old.
- Be a Canadian resident.
- Have a working income below the designated threshold for their province or territory.
To receive the disability supplement, applicants must be eligible for the disability tax credit and have an approved T2201 form filed with the CRA.
How to Access Payments
There’s no need to apply for ACWB payments separately. Payments are issued automatically to eligible recipients based on their tax returns. To qualify for advanced payments, individuals must have filed their income tax and benefit return before November 1 of the benefit period.
The next installment of the CWB will be sent out on July 11, 2025.
