Canadian Travelers Embrace Rail Revival: Air Canada Expands Intermodal Routes in Europe and Asia

Canadian travelers are rediscovering the benefits of train travel as Air Canada enhances its intermodal connections, providing a seamless blend of air and rail options across Europe and Asia. The airline’s new expansion aims to meet the growing demand for sustainable, multi-modal travel, making it easier than ever to journey through iconic destinations.

Rail’s resurgence follows an era dominated by low-cost carriers (LCCs), which, for decades, transformed short-haul travel. Yet recent global shifts toward sustainable tourism, along with policies like France’s ban on short-haul flights where rail alternatives exist, have rekindled interest in slower, more eco-friendly travel. Air Canada’s intermodal strategy taps into this shift, allowing customers to combine flights with rail connections in Italy, Spain, the UK, South Korea, and more.

In 2024, Air Canada extended its intermodal options across Europe and Asia, giving travelers connections on Trenitalia in Italy, Renfe in Spain, and KORAIL in South Korea. These additions mean Canadians can access seamless travel across 30 Italian cities, 24 Spanish cities, and eight South Korean destinations — all within a single itinerary. The airline has also partnered with the UK’s major rail operators for smooth connections from London Heathrow, making Air Canada’s intermodal options the most comprehensive yet.

Mark Galardo, Air Canada’s EVP of Revenue and Network Planning, emphasized the benefits: “Our intermodal connections provide more choice and sustainable options for travelers.” The convenience and ease of booking these connections on aircanada.com or through travel agencies allow passengers to explore Europe and Asia more sustainably and efficiently. The airline’s intermodal strategy aims to deliver a fully integrated travel experience, bridging the gap between air and rail.
