Jay Leno, the beloved former Tonight Show host, is nursing significant injuries after a fall while on his way to dinner in Pittsburgh over the weekend. The 74-year-old comedian, who suffered extensive bruising to the left side of his face and a broken wrist, revealed the details of the accident ahead of his show in Beverly Hills on Monday night.
The Fall and Its Aftermath
Leno, who appeared with a patch covering his swollen left eye, shared his experience with Inside Edition, explaining that he was staying at a Hampton Inn 30 miles outside of Pittsburgh. On Saturday night, he attempted to walk to a nearby restaurant before his performance when he took a dangerous shortcut down a 60-foot hill.
The fall resulted in significant injuries, including bruising across his face, a broken wrist, and a lost fingernail. Leno also revealed that his eye was swollen shut, showing off the camera damage. Despite the accident, he carried on with his performance just three hours later, showcasing his resilience. “It isn’t a big deal, it’s alright,” he told reporters, downplaying the severity of the situation.
A History of Health Challenges
This latest accident comes just two years after Leno suffered severe burns to his face and body in a garage fire, for which he received treatment at Los Angeles’ Grossman Burn Center in November 2022. Leno, an avid car collector, had been working on a vehicle when the fire occurred. He also sustained broken ribs, a fractured collarbone, and cracked kneecaps in a motorbike collision shortly after.
When asked about his string of bad luck, Leno humorously reflected, “The great thing about this age is that you don’t learn by your mistakes – you just keep doing the same stupid things.”
Despite these setbacks, Leno remains determined, to continue with his charitable work. He is set to perform at a charity event on Wednesday evening in support of the very burn hospital that treated him in 2022.
