Ariana Grande, starring as Glinda the Good Witch in the highly anticipated film adaptation of Wicked, has sparked an online debate over the lyrics of the classic song “Popular.” Grande, who stars alongside Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, corrected the film’s official Instagram post, pointing out a lyric discrepancy.
The movie’s social media team recently shared a clip of Grande singing, “I’ll teach you the proper poise when you talk to boys.” However, Grande commented, “It’s ploys !!!!!! i love you @wickedmovie,” prompting a lively discussion among fans and fellow cast members.
One fan on X (formerly Twitter) chimed in, “I had to go look this up because this means I’ve been singing the wrong lyrics for over 20 years!” Some fans have found both “poise” and “ploys” in lyrics over the years, but according to Broadway stars Jennafer Newberry Peery and Ginna Claire Mason—who both played Glinda on stage—the original phrase is “proper ploys.”
Catch Ariana Grande’s take on Glinda when Wicked premieres in theaters on November 22, reigniting nostalgia with a modern twist on the beloved musical.
