In a historic twist, Rome’s iconic Colosseum will host staged gladiator battles for the first time in nearly two thousand years, thanks to a $1.5 million sponsorship deal with Airbnb. The initiative, which aims to promote “conscious tourism,” will allow a select few to experience the ancient arena as gladiators, immersing them in a recreated journey through history.
Under the deal, Airbnb will fund educational programs at the Colosseum, focusing on the rich history of the structure and its gladiatorial past. Eight Airbnb users and their guests will have the unique opportunity to enter the arena after hours on May 7-8, following the original underground path used by ancient gladiators. Applications open on November 27, with participants chosen through a lottery.
Despite its novelty, the sponsorship has sparked controversy. Some critics, including tourists and housing activists, see it as part of a problematic trend of “touristification” by short-term rental platforms like Airbnb, which they say contribute to overtourism and housing shortages. Alberto Campailla of the nonprofit Nonna Roma criticized the partnership as “a disgrace” that prioritizes tourism at the expense of local residents and cultural preservation.
While the collaboration seeks to finance preservation efforts, some visitors fear it blurs the line between tourism and amusement, potentially eroding the authentic experience of Rome’s historic sites.
