In a memorable cold open on the Saturday Night Live post-election episode, several of the show’s cast members made a humorous, yet pointed, appeal to President-elect Donald Trump. Taking to the stage in Studio 8H in New York, the cast began by acknowledging the shock and horror many viewers felt in the wake of the presidential election results.
Kenan Thompson, setting the tone, humorously referenced Trump’s previous calls for “vengeance” against his political opponents, with cast member Ego Nwodim adding that those brave enough to speak out against the former president might now feel vulnerable. The serious tone quickly shifted to comedy, as Thompson joked, “And that is why we at SNL would like to say to Donald Trump, we… have been with you all along!”
The cast, now in full comedic mode, expressed their continued support for Trump leading up to the election, with Bowen Yang joking that they had “never wavered” in their backing of the president. Heidi Gardner further exaggerated her “support,” quipping that she had voted for Trump “fifty times” in Pennsylvania.
As the skit continued, Thompson and Marcello Hernandez made a direct plea to Trump: “So if you’re keeping some kind of list of your enemies, then… we should not be on that list.”
The cold open also featured a fresh version of James Austin Johnson’s Trump impersonation, as he appeared on stage as the newly re-imagined “hot, jacked Trump,” complete with a red headband and bulging muscles. “They finally got the body right,” Johnson quipped, before joking that he would now portray Trump in a “flattering” light because “he’s frankly my hero.”
In a surprise twist, SNL alum Dana Carvey made a cameo, not as President Joe Biden, but as Elon Musk, adding another layer of political humor to the mix.
The episode was hosted by Bill Burr, with Mk.gee providing the musical performance.
