In a tragic and shocking incident, Montreal resident Fsha Tekhle, 36, has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of Brkti Berhe, a mother of four, in Ottawa. Berhe was fatally attacked on Thursday morning at Paul Landry Park near Uplands and Paul Anka drives while two of her children were present. Ottawa police have classified this killing as femicide, a gender-based crime against women or girls.
Ottawa Police Deputy Chief Trish Ferguson confirmed that Berhe was with two of her children during the assault and praised nearby witnesses who offered compassionate aid. After the incident, the children were taken to CHEO Hospital for precautionary checks. Tekhle reportedly fled the scene and was later arrested near Casselman, Ontario, approximately 50 kilometers from the crime site.
This marks Ottawa’s second homicide classified as femicide, reflecting a growing recognition of violence against women based on gender. Deputy Chief Ferguson emphasized that femicide “is about stereotypical gender roles and discrimination against women.” She clarified that the suspect did not have an intimate relationship with Berhe but knew her through a family connection.
A related Facebook post connected to Tekhle surfaced shortly after the attack. The post, timestamped just minutes after Berhe’s death, contained a single Amharic word meaning “Done.” While CBC reporters viewed the account, it became unavailable by Friday morning, and authorities have not confirmed Tekhle’s connection to the post. He appeared in court on Friday, facing a first-degree murder charge.
