Cuba has restored power to much of the island, including most of Havana, following widespread grid failures that left 10 million people without electricity last week. The outages, triggered by Tropical Storm Oscar, caused major disruptions across eastern Cuba, with heavy rains, mudslides, and flooding wreaking havoc on infrastructure.
Cuban authorities confirmed that by Tuesday afternoon, the national electrical grid had stabilized, and power had been restored to 70% of the country. Havana saw 90% of its residents regain electricity by midday. However, some remote areas, especially in Guantanamo, remain difficult to access due to damaged roads and raging rivers.
Tropical Storm Oscar, downgraded from a Category 1 hurricane, caused significant damage in the provinces it hit, killing seven people and leaving many towns cut off from essential services. While power restoration efforts are ongoing, protests broke out in Havana over continued outages, as residents demanded an end to the blackouts.
