Winnipeg Duo Charged with Cat Torture and Dark Web Videos in Disturbing Animal Cruelty Case
Winnipeg, Manitoba – A man and a woman are facing multiple animal cruelty charges in connection with the alleged torture and killing of cats, which authorities say were documented in videos and photos and posted to the dark web.
The investigation began in August when the Office of the Provincial Veterinarian Animal Welfare alerted Winnipeg police after discovering disturbing images online, according to Const. Stephen Spencer.
Police believe the videos and images, showing the abuse of approximately 10 cats, were created and shared within Winnipeg. Investigators say some of the animals were acquired through social media sales platforms, underscoring a growing concern about the misuse of such platforms.
Following the tip-off, officers executed a search warrant in the Lord Roberts neighbourhood, leading to the arrest of a 55-year-old woman and a 40-year-old man. Both suspects were already known to police, though officials did not elaborate on their prior connections or relationship.
The two individuals remain in custody, with investigators describing the case as one of the most severe instances of animal cruelty they have encountered.
“This is the worst case investigators have dealt with—an extremely disturbing incident involving animal cruelty,” said Spencer during a news conference on Friday.
He further highlighted the seriousness of such crimes, noting that cruelty toward animals is often associated with the potential escalation of violent behavior toward humans.
Police are still investigating the suspects’ motive, Spencer added, revealing that the content was initially discovered by someone who accessed it online and subsequently reported it to provincial authorities.
Meanwhile, Winnipeg police continue to investigate other cases involving dead cats found in the Point Douglas area. However, Spencer clarified that these incidents do not appear to be connected to the dark web investigation at this time.
The case has raised alarm about the dangers of the dark web and the misuse of online platforms, prompting authorities to warn the public about the risks associated with illegal online activities and the exploitation of animals.
