(VIDEO) Navy Distributes Free Books to Schools in Rivers

The Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Pathfinder has distributed free education materials to pupils of three primary schools in Opobo/Nkoro local government area of Rivers State, as part of its Operation Delta Sanity Four programme.

The beneficiary schools were Opobo Primary School, Saint Paul Primary School One and Two, Abaziebie Model Primary School in Opobo/Nkoro.

Speaking during the presentation of the education materials, Commander of NNS Pathfinder, Commodore Cajethan Aniaku, said the gesture was an initiative of the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla.

Commodore Cajethan Aniaku, who was represented by Navy Captain Bassey Bassey stated that the Nigerian Navy identified the fact that education is very important to the future of children, he said the target of the project tagged ‘Free Educational Rhapsody’ is to encourage pupils in their educational pursuits and foster well-rounded development through extracurricular activities.

Earlier The team lead by Navy Captain Bassey visited the palace of King Jaja of Opobo where they met with the Vice Chairman of Opobo Council of Traditional Rulers who noted that the initiative employs both kinetic and non-kinetic approaches. He noted that with the latter focusing on community outreach and engagement. He said under the programme, launched in October 2024, the Navy aimed to combat crude oil theft, illegal bunkering, piracy, and other criminal activities in the Niger Delta region.

Receiving the naval officers at the Opobo Palace, Edwin Brown, Vice Chairman of Opobo Council of Traditional Rulers who spoke on behalf of the king of Opobo, Dandeson Douglas, thanked the Chief of Naval Staff and the Nigerian Navy for the gesture extended to the community.

Head teachers from the beneficiary schools and students expressed their gratitude for the materials.

They pledged to ensure the resources are used effectively and noted that the gesture would motivate the students to focus on their studies.

The Council Chief urged the Navy to sustain such initiatives to continue benefiting local communities.
