97 Drivers Test Positive for Cannabis in Winnipeg Police Enforcement Campaign

In a recent enforcement campaign aimed at cracking down on impaired driving, Winnipeg police revealed that 97 drivers tested positive for cannabis. The campaign, which was conducted over a focused period, underscores growing concerns about drug-impaired driving and the increasing prevalence of cannabis use among motorists in the region.

According to the Winnipeg Police Service, the initiative was part of a larger strategy to enhance road safety and reduce the number of impaired driving incidents on city streets. Officers utilized roadside screening devices and field sobriety tests to assess drivers suspected of being under the influence of cannabis.

Police reported that the 97 positive tests were recorded using oral fluid screening devices, which detect THC—the psychoactive component in cannabis. These roadside tools are part of the evolving technology being adopted to help law enforcement better detect and respond to drug-impaired driving.

Authorities emphasized that while cannabis is legal for recreational and medical use in Canada, driving under its influence remains illegal and highly dangerous. THC affects motor coordination, reaction time, and decision-making skills, significantly increasing the risk of accidents.

“Our message is clear,” said a spokesperson for the Winnipeg Police Service. “Driving high is just as dangerous and illegal as driving drunk. We’re committed to keeping our roads safe through targeted enforcement and public education.”

This campaign also resulted in a number of charges being laid under the Criminal Code for impaired operation, alongside administrative suspensions and vehicle impoundments.

The police have reiterated that they will continue to conduct similar operations throughout the year and are urging drivers to make responsible choices when it comes to consuming cannabis and getting behind the wheel.

The public is encouraged to use alternative transportation options, such as taxis, rideshares, or designated drivers, if they have consumed cannabis or any other impairing substance.

This alarming spike in cannabis-impaired drivers serves as a reminder that enforcement efforts are not just about penalties, but about saving lives and protecting all road users from preventable tragedies.
