$90M Settlement Reached in NYC Sightseeing Helicopter Crash Lawsuit

The family of Trevor Cadigan, one of five victims killed in a 2018 sightseeing helicopter crash in New York City, has reached a $90 million settlement, bringing an end to the wrongful death lawsuit. The agreement follows a $116 million jury award last fall, which was later challenged by defendants.

Cadigan’s relatives opted to settle to ensure accountability and push for improved safety in the helicopter tour industry, according to their lawyer. The crash occurred when a passenger restraint tether accidentally triggered a fuel shut-off switch, causing the engine to fail. While the pilot escaped, the five passengers were trapped in their harnesses and drowned.

FlyNYON, which arranged the flight, has since implemented several safety changes, including improved harnesses, a new quick-release system, pilot training enhancements, and a dedicated safety officer. The Federal Aviation Administration initially grounded similar flights after the crash but later reinstated them with stricter seat restraint regulations.
